Glacier National Park Guide - OutdoorPlaces.Com

Glacier National Park Guide - Camping & Lodging - West Glacier

Glacier National Park has thirteen campsites and six lodges/cabin facilities within the federally controlled section of the park.  There are a tremendous number of state and private campgrounds, hotels and lodges located in the surrounding area and in Canada.

All campgrounds listed are assumed to have improved pads (at least gravel), fire grates or grills, picnic tables, electric hookups, water, showers, and toilet facilities unless otherwise noted.  OutdoorPlaces.Com strongly recommends calling facilities ahead of time and making proper reservations if possible to assure a pleasant visit when in the area.

 Backcountry Camping

Glacier National Park Map, Copyright 2000, OutdoorPlaces.Com, All Rights ReservedBackcountry camping is allowed within Glacier National Park and requires a permit, walk-in permits can be obtained as well as through mail-in application in advance.  Permits can be secured at Apgar, St. Mary's, Many Glaciers and at park headquarters.  Permits cost $4 for adults and $2 for children under 17 and those over 65.  There is a $20 fee for making advanced reservations.

There are 66 backcountry campsites within the park.  Some have restrictions that may include no fires or limits of one to two nights.  Most dispersed backcountry camping area allows four or less parties at each site.  Gunsite Lake and Goat Haunt Shelters have facilities for seven parties.  Backcountry sites range from lakeside, to the open prairie to the mountains.  None of the lakeside backcountry campsites allow motorized boat access.

Certain requirements due to black bear and brown bear activity are required while in the backcountry.  Glacier National Park takes stewardship of the area very seriously.  Damaging a backcountry site or gross violation of minimum impact camping practices is a federal felony offense.  For more information on backcountry camping contact Glacier National Park, Attention, Backcountry Permits, West Glacier, Montana, 59936.  When sending your letter request a backcountry camping information packet.
