Why synthetic? Newer materials are excellent insulators. Most synthetic materials wick away moisture better than down. Synthetic material maintains it's insulating qualities even if heavily compressed, and in some cases when wet.
Why not synthetic? Pound for pound you can not beat natural down (feathers) for insulation. Synthetic does not compress as well as a down bag for packing. Some synthetics are developed using a variety of chemicals that in it's process may be harmful to the environment and at the point of disposal are not biodegradable.
