Ansebumskit Brook - Holden, Massachusetts
Winding down from a marsh on top of Smith Hill and fed from Pine Hill Reservoir, the Ansebumskit (pronounced anne-a-BUM-sket) Brook winds down to Eagle Lake. ?From there it meanders around Christian Hill before entering a gorge and joining the Quinapoxet River.
Off of Quinapoxet Street near Massachusetts State Highway 31, an abandoned road leads to a bridge with a trail heading southwest into the forest along the brook. ?Cross the old rock retaining wall (careful, it is a long way down), built to hold a water wheel from a long gone saw mill, and you come to the top of a thirty foot high water fall and this rocky gorge.
The water and area is surprisingly clean, with graffiti reserved for the culverts under the bridge back by Quinapoxet Street. ?For the more adventerous, you can dawn water shoes and walk through the Ansebumskit to where it makes a sharp bend to the east. ?At this spot a deep pool has been carved out over the years that is filled with sand and small gravel. ?It is a refreshing place for a swim, clothes optional, but don't get caught!
