Massive Sandstone Pinnacle - Peshastin Pinnacles State Park - Washington
Located just ten miles east of Leavenworth, Washington, Peshastin Pinnacles has been a popular rock climbing destination for over 50 years. As the Pacific moisture is rung out by the Cascade Mountains, the air dries and warms down the eastern slopes creating desert conditions with ponderosa pine and thistle among the rocks. The park has had an interesting history, originally privately head powerlines now scar the entrance area. Opening up the gate to the desert environment (the area around it is completely irrigated with fruit orchards) and you enter another world. Hike the crisscrossing trails north, past the powerlines and you enter a world vastly different from the rain forests, less than a 150 miles away.
