Lava Canyon - Mount Saint Helens Volcanic National Monument - Washington
Found in the shadow of the moonscape that is Mount Saint Helens, Lava Canyon was created by the massive explosion that blew off 1,200 feet of the mountain on May 18, 1980. As lahars rushed down in all directions, they scoured and devoured the land. Lava Canyon was unearthed by the powerful forces of a lahar on that fateful day in May and revealed an ancient landscape created by an earlier explosion. Hikers can enjoy a 1/4 mile, one mile, or over two mile difficult trek into the incredibly beautiful canyon, only 21 years young. Many hikers elect to take the mile long route to the suspension bridge that crosses the river.
